Protecting Yourself from Predators on Facebook

Supersonic Safety Research is a user and fan of Social Media, but with many things in life it is a duel edged sword.  There are those who seek to use this medium for their evil intentions, and so we must be vigilant to thwart them.  Whenever we come across anything of value we like to share it with our readers and friends.
The following is from a post on about.com (link to article below), the article is: "How Online Predators Make Use of Your Facebook Profile-A break down on just how predators turn your profile in to a map of your life."

Is It Legit?

Yesterday I talked about accreditation and finding reputable/legitimate training/certification.  In some instances it is hard to validate if the offering is all that legitimate and then you will have to do some detective work.  For instance ASIS offers several certifications and is well known and respected  throughout the industry, but you may not know this.  What can you do?  Search the internet to see what people are saying, talk to people in the industry, maybe contact a local college and talk to some professors.  You want to spend your time and money wisely and at the end of the day have something of value to show for it.  I'm a BIG fan of training and certifications , you can never know everything and you want to stay informed and current.  So find something that interests you and go for it.  That said I'm going to get back on track with some certifications I've been meaning to pursue.      Nerd smile

Accreditation? Certification?

If you watched "The Real CSI" you saw that Frontline called into question the certification  from American College of Forensic Examiners International (ACFEI).  Go to the link below and watch the 8:44 minute video and after you watch the video scroll down to read the ACFEI's response.

Supersonic Safety Research is not making a judgement either way on ACFEI, but we do want to talk a little bit about accreditation and certification.  We all would like to add to our skill sets by additional training and valid certifications; however we also want to deal with reputable organizations and get quality training.  So, how do we know, how do we assess the institutions and companies to ensure quality and validity?  In some instances we can go here:

This is the US Department of Education, Accreditation Institution Search. or you can Search by Accrediting Agency.

Tomorrow we'll talk more about finding accredited and reputable certifications.

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

So, did you watch Frontline's, "The Real CSI"?  What did you think?  Interesting, right?  I think people in general want answers and that is why CSI is so popular.  Forensics gives us answers.  However; the answers need to be the truth or as truthful as possible.  You can go to the link below and read the book "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States".  You can read it online for FREE as a PDF.

The Real CSI

Do you love CSI?  Then you will enjoy this program from Frontline (Supersonic Safety Research did.)  It aired April 17, 2012 on PBS.  Great information, VERY interesting and it is about 54 minutes long.  I learned some stuff and it has sent me on a fact finding mission.

Mysterious Fact?

This sounds mysterious, but it is a fact.

The offspring of two sets of identical twins are legally cousins, but...genetically siblings.

I did not know this and had to fact check it to be sure - it just seemed so unbelievable at first glance. However; when you think it through it makes absolute sense.

LESSON - Don't go with your initial assumptions (remember what we've said about -DON'T ASSUME).  Think things through.

Fraud Prevention Month

March is FRAUD PREVENTION MONTH, and so yesterday we posted the FBI link and reminded everyone to "BE CRIME SMART".  Today we have our neighbors to the North (unless you're in Detroit), The Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  They have some very good information and you can get it in either French or English.
