Mnemonics

A few days ago I talked about the KISS METHOD for instructing and learning.  Today I'm going to talk about remembering what we learn using MNEMONICS.  Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines MNEMONIC as: assisting or intended to assist memoryAn example would be HOMES to remember the names of the Great Lakes - Huron - Ontario - Michigan - Erie - Superior.

 What mnemonics do you use?
I use Mnemonics when I'm writing reports I always go through my 5 W's -WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and sometimes WHY.      Nerd smile

Assumptions, Hypothesis and Theories

As a Private Investigator you will gather facts and then you will need to analyze them.  When analyzing facts DO NOT ASSUME.  It is tempting to make assumptions, but that will not yield accurate results.  What you need to do is form a HYPOTHESIS - this is the basis for further investigation.  Develop a THEORY and then PROVE IT.

Finding Jimmy Hoffa

I love this pic from Down With Detroit   (they have awesome stuff).  Anyway, someone posted this pic on our Facebook page and said we should solve this case.  My reply was that we don't have a backhoe in our toolkit.  What do you think it will take to solve this case and do you think it ever will be?
Here is Down With Detroit's website where you can see this design and many others:

The KISS Method

As you can see from my posts this Private Investigator likes brevity.  I believe in the KISS Method - KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPIDThat is why my posts are longer than Tweets, but shorter than a dissertation. No information overload here, just short bursts of brilliance Nerd smile  Occasionally, I may have a topic that will require a lengthy post or that I'm SO passionate about that I ramble on, but mostly I'll KISS.

Facts, Distortion and Conclusions

Do NOT distort the facts.  Coloring the facts so they paint the picture you want is unethical.  Stay objective and let the facts speak for themselves.  If you need to draw a conclusion, base it on the facts.  Be clear in what is fact and what is opinion.  Use the facts to substantiate your opinion.
If you do all this Sgt. Friday will be proud. :^)

Dragnet

Dum-De-Dum-Dum

Anyone familiar with Dragnet will recognize the above.  Yesterday I quoted Sgt. Joe Friday  the lead character on the show played by Jack Webb.  The show first aired on radio in 1949.  In 1952 it debuted on TV and then in 1987 a film version was made starring Dan Aykroyd as the legendary sergeant.  Like "play it again Sam", the famous quote of "just the facts ma'am" was never uttered. on the show.  What was said was, "All we want are the facts, ma'am".   That is just as good for all of us private investigators, as that is ALL we want -  THE FACTS.  For those of you who never saw Dragnet here is a taste. Enjoy.

Just the Facts

"Just the facts, ma'am" -  Sgt. Joe Friday on Dragnet

Private investigation often requires gathering 'the facts' and putting it into a report of some kind.  I was always taught when writing a report to make sure it includes the 4/5 W's.  WHO - WHAT - WHEN - WHERE and sometimes WHY.  Facts are objective. WHY is subjective, and so that is the reason it is only sometimes WHY
So just remember Sgt. Joe Friday and the 4 W's and you'll have it covered.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

Yesterday I quoted from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, this is a good basic resource for career information.  Your local library should have a copy or you can check it out online here:

If you want to see the information on Private Detectives and Investigators here is the link to that page:

Spoiler Alert: Tomorrow we'll talk about facts

Defining a PI

The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes what a Private Investigator does as someone who, "find facts and analyze information"   I like that, how about you?
