FOIA a Researcher's and Private Investigator's Best friend
It is Saturday night and we are going to 'Say It Again PI Sam'. Tonight we revisit Freedom of Information Act - AKA FOIA. FOIA is an important tool for researchers and Private Investigators. We never did put the whole class on YouTube and are working on actually make a series of training videos made specifically for posting on YouTube. 2014 promises to be a busy and productive year for Supersonic Safety Research.
Supersonic Safety Research hosted their PI School tonight and the topic was the Freedom of Information Act, AKA FOIA.
FOIA is a 'tool' that Private Investigators use as a regular course of business to access information. Hopefully, we will have the lecture up on You Tube soon, so those who were unable to attend can see it. Additionally, we are hoping to have PDF downloads to supplement our training. Here is a helpful link from FOIA.gov. You can find where to make FOIA requests to federal agencies here.
FYI - this is a great resource.

Chinese Soldiers Beat Fire Recriuts - Why?
This story and video out of China are disturbing. If you've been through a training academy (I've been through 2), you know how tough it can be. The physical demands and mind games they play can seem brutal to you at times, but nothing compared to this. There is no logic or reason to treat recruits this way, this is an abuse of power and is inexcusable. When videos like this go viral, it is a step towards change. Watch the video (it is almost 16 minutes long) and then give us your thoughts and comments.

Need a Niche? Fraud is Big Business
It's Saturday, soooooo - 'Say It Again PI Sam'. Today we'll revisit a post about certifications, and in particular the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. This is a good field and niche for Private Investigators to look into. Check out their web site, there is a lot of good info on there in addition to the certification info. I am always on the lookout for valuable resources and you will find some here.
As a Private Investigator you will want to be licensed in the state/s
you are operating in; however you may also want to add some
certifications to your resume along with accessing valuable resources.
You may have one niche or many. Supersonic Safety Research
is always looking for what is available and what may be beneficial to
our business. Here is an interesting certification and association: Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
This association offers membership, certification and training for
those interested in preventing, detecting and investigating fraud. Here
is their web site:

Supersonic Safety Research Reminds Us All to Never Assume
It is Saturday night and we're ready to 'Say It Again PI Sam'. Tonight we want to remind you to, "NEVER ASSUME". This is NOT just a good rule for Law Enforcement Officers and Private Investigators to follow, but everyone should follow it in their everyday life. I couldn't explain it better than Tony Randall does as Felix Unger in "The Odd Couple". So, without further ado here it is:
Never Assume

This Nothing is Something
My "Friday Favorite' is something that always makes me laugh - "Seinfeld". For a show that was about 'nothing', it sure ended up being quite 'something'. As for a favorite episode...wow, hard to choose just one. However; as someone who used to commute to NYC and rode the subways, I'd have to say 'The Subway' episode.

NYPD's New/Old Police Commissioner
New York City is getting a new mayor and the new mayor has announced a new Police Commissioner. Congratulations William Bratton. This will be Mr. Bratton's second time as NYPD Police Commissioner, he previously served from 1994-1996. During this time he helped institute CompStat a data-driven system for tracking crime that enables police to use their resources wisely. Mr. Bratton replaces Raymond Kelly the longest serving Police Commissioner in NYPD history. Would love to do some research and write some in-depth blogs about both men. Fascinating men to all of us interested in Criminal Justice. Stay tuned.

Are You Crazy or is it Just the Moon?
Full Moon |
So, YES people are crazy. But NO there aren't any werewolves and the full moon doesn't make people any crazier than they already are. Now go out and have a beer and enjoy the next full moon. :^)

Different Courthouse, Different Procedures, Different Policies
When talking with a colleague the other day, he was lamenting that procedures vary from courthouse to courthouse. He saw the inconsistencies as incompetence, but having worked in courthouses over the years I knew that wasn't the case. Procedures vary because each court sets it own rules within the law. In fact procedures often vary from judge to judge, again within the law. This can be frustrating for those who have to do business in the courts, and even for those who work in the court who must be mindful of each judge's policies. When I worked in NY, these variances were often joked about because the court system in NY is titled "The New York State Unified Courts". The fact is those who make these policy decisions do it, not to annoy or confuse, but because they believe those policies work best.
