Everybody Loves Traffic School

After watching "Motor Mania"  did you think you were more Mr Walker or  Mr Wheeler?  Perhaps you are a little of both. As I said I would use this video to start off my 'Driving Classes'.  Why?  Well watch this episode of Everybody Loves Raymond (Traffic Class) and see Robert's attempt to teach a 'Driving Class'.  'Robert's reliance on 'the binder' to structure his course demonstrates why his course is - BORING!  As I said I sat in these classes before I taught them, and my instructors stuck to 'the binder' and bored everyone to death.  I laugh everytime I watch this episode as it reminds me of how I started out and evolved  my class to where it was interesting and informative, where I felt my students were engaged and walked away as safer drivers.   I'll be putting together 'Defensive Driving" segments for the blog and hopefully you will find them interesting and helpful.

Driver Ed Part 1

The other day I briefly discussed when I taught, what New York State termed, 'Points and Insurance Reduction' program.  It was called this because people would take the course to either reduce 'points' on their driver's license or to get a reduction on their automobile insurance.  I preferred to call it a 'Defensive Driving' course because I thought that was how we need to drive - DEFENSIVELY  in order to be safe on the road.  I liked to start my classes off with the following video, Disney's "Motor Mania" starring Goofy.  This CARtoon was made in 1950, but remains very relevant today, not at all outdated.  Watch and see the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde like transformation that takes place as Mr. Walker turns into Mr. Wheeler when he gets behind the wheel of a car.
